In December 2008, the Inn was acquired by the present owners Jude and Dave Tayler and extensively refurbished to create a comfortable, relaxed ambience.

You'll be assured of a warm welcome, served local real ales (we are a freehouse), good wines and a wide range of spirits and liqueurs, and well fed from menus that concentrate on delivering locally-sourced, freshly prepared and skilfully cooked good ‘pub’ food.

Real Ales

In addition we have a terrific log fire, an original bread oven, lots of nooks and crannies, one room that vies to be ‘the smallest pub dining room in the country’, the mandatory pub ghost, a large, safe beer garden with panoramic views over the Sussex countryside, intriguing Asian bamboo smoking or dining huts and lots of car parking. We hope and trust that the recipe provides the centuries-old, but still evolving, John’s Cross tradition of a warm welcome when you arrive, good fayre whilst you stay and fond memories after you’ve gone.

Future plans include a children’s play area in one corner of the beer garden, an alfresco dining patio beyond the dining room and the creation of B&B guest rooms in the old studio.

From its vantage point on the main road to the coast, this beautiful, historic old Inn has seen many a sight and heard many a tale. Whether you are a regular, a local or a passing, weary traveller we invite you to join our history as we approach our 500th birthday and all that lies beyond.
